About A.C.E | Curriculum Explained | A Student's Office | PACE Calculator

We thought that the best way to explain an A.C.E student's workspace was to illustrate a student's "office" to help you understand the system.

STAR CHART (Student Progress Chart)

The Star Chart is a card posted on the students Bulliten Board with subjects listed on the left for each progress report period. At the beginning of the academic year a Star Chart is printed for every Student and throughout the academic year, when the student successfully completes a PACE, a star is placed opposite the PACE subject in the proper column representing the week in which the PACE Test was passed. Different color Stars are used according to the mark a student achieves:

100% = Gold
94% - 99% =Silver
87% - 93% = Orange
80% - 92% = Yellow

Little bibes stickers are placed on the Star Chart, when a student sucessfully memorises the monthly Scripture passage.
(Other centres may adopt different star systems and color codings but the concept and results remain the same.)

Remember, as insignificant as a little star or Bible sticker may seem to you, they represent tangible progress, achievement and reward when the students place them on their Star Chart!

Projection

Goal setting may be relatively easy for some students but more difficult for others. We assist our students in goal setting by preparing them a “Projection” at the beginning of every term. The projection lists the books, by subject, that a student is required to complete over the term. For some students the supervisor will include a daily subject plan at the bottom of the projection which establishes the number of pages a student should complete in each subject every day. Most students are able to prepare their own daily plans by the time they reach high school.

The projection is printed in duplicate. One is attached to the student’s bulletin board and one is stuck on the fridge at home! The student is required to color in both copies of the projection as PACEs are completed so that everyone (including parents) can accurately monitor progress.

Projections are set by the Supervisor, discussed with the students, and approved by the parents. Consequently, all projections have to be completed before students are permitted break for holidays … and everyone knows it!

The Goal Card

Students on the ACE program are trained to set and accomplish goals from an early age and, as university students, their training pays big dividends! Goals are set, in blue pen, on a “Goal Card” pinned on a small white bulletin board in the student’s work area. Students are required to enter specific page numbers (i.e., 12–16) in each subject and are not permitted to commence with the day’s work until all goals have been correctly set.

The Goal Card is designed for daily entries each week. Each day, as they complete their goals in each subject, students enter reasonable goals for the following day and draw a forward diagonal line through each completed goal. Students are never allowed to alter their goals, cross them out or “bring them down” to the following day without consulting the Supervisor and obtaining her permission.

If a student is taking a test or is revising for a test on any particular day, entries such as “Test” and “Review” are made onto the Goal Card . Such entries should not be repeated two days in a row.

Goal Cards are reviewed by the Class Monitor at the beginning of the day, and by the Supervisor at the end of the day. Any unachieved daily goals automatically become “homework” and are entered into a printed Homework Diary - which parents sign after the work has been completed.

PACES

PACES are "bite-sized" modules of curriculum given to students in accordance with their academic prescription. Each PACE serves as both the "Text book" and the "excersize book" and students always complete them in pencil.

PACES are colour coded acording to subject as follows:

Mathyellow or gray
Englishred
Word Buildingpurple
Literature and Creative Writingcoral
Scienceblue
Social Studiesgreen
Bible Readingtan
Animal Scienceturquoise
Electivesvarious colors with white

After their termly projections have been prepared, students are issued the first PACE of each subject (the one with the lowest number). The test that is stapled in the middle of the PACE is removed and placed in the student’s test folder for later use. Students are given their PACE tests, under examination conditions, once the entire PACE has been successfully completed.

It is important that the student take no more than three weeks to complete and test on a PACE. The normal time needed is two weeks.
Students with learning limitations may need to work in only two or three subjects at a time in order to attain their goals. In such cases, the student will normally work in Math and Social Studies first and then English, Science, and Word Building. Students are encouraged to take at least two tests each week. This is the minimum needed for adequate academic progress.

Flags

It is imperative that peace and quiet is maintained in the learning centre so that the environment is conducive to learning. Consequently, no talking or walking around is permitted in the classroom during lesson time - unless a group session is in progress.

A flag system has been devised to enable students to get attention without calling across the room, or clicking their fingers! Two flags are in use at Siloam. The first is the Scoring Flag which looks like the school logo and is used when the student requires permission to leave his work area and go to the Scoring table. The second flag is the Monitors and Supervisors Flag which looks like the Christian flag and is used to get the attention of the Monitor or the Supervisor. The monitor attends to all the students needs - with the exception of academic teaching- whilst the Supervisor is qualified to give academic assistance.

Little butterflies are attached to a students scoring flag if they need permission to visit the rest-room.

Bin

It is very important for students to keep their work space neat and clean. An organised desk leads to an organised mind and a productive day! Children are taught to be efficient by preparing themselves and their environment. Desk bins are provided for pencil sharpening, tissues, old study papers … and the occasional “prohibited note”! At the end of every day, it is the student’s responsibility to empty his or her desk bin and tidy up books.
